The Siege of Leningrad Ends

Leningrad is liberated from Nazi Siege on Jan. 27, 1944!

Today marks the day that Leningrad was freed from the Nazi blockade of the city, which lasted 900 days, during World War II.

In St. Petersburg today more than 154,000 Siege of Leningrad survivors will celebrate the 68th anniversary of the monumental liberation of the city on January 27th 1944.

The city is decorated to commemorate the unforgettable day and there will be events dedicated to the anniversary held throughout the city. Today a memorial ceremony was held at 9:30 am when city residents layed flowers at the sign on 14 Nevsky Prospekt which warned citizens during the siege that this side of the street was more dangerous during Nazi bombing.

There will also be a ceremonial laying of flowers at the Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad at Ploshchad Pobedy and at the Piskaryovskoye Cemetery, where most of the victims of the siege are burried.

The city is also currently holding the 21st International Siege Survivors Assocciate conference, where more than 130 siege survivors living abroad will attend.

Also on this day, Jan. 27, in 1945 Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration camps of Aushwitz and Birkenau.
