Picking Mushrooms

It's been a good season for mushrooms in St. Petersburg.

The rainy month has been good news for mushroomers around St. Petersburg. This autum Russian mushroom hunters have been enjoying a record crop of the tasty fungi, returning from the forest with basket loads. Some have gone as far to say that this mushroom season has been the best in the last 50 years.

Picking mushrooms is a cultural thing in Russia, they have been doing it for centuries. I have several friends who tell stories about going mushroom picking with their mothers and grandmothers during the early autum months.

Mushroom are considered to be healthy and quite tasty as well. Russians typically fry them with potatoes and onions with a little sour cream on top, or make a delicious mushrrom soup.

But not all the mushrooms in the forest are worthy of eating! Be awae if you're not familiar with the forest and the mushroom in which it bears. Several mushrooms can be poisonious and often look very similar to the prize mushrooms. This is something that most Russians know, they grew up at the dacha going on walks through the forest picking and learning about all the local mushrooms and berries.

Mushroom picking is seen as a good way to speed family time at the dacha as well, going for a walk in the fresh air of the forest, outside of the city. Kids often enjoy it too, most make it into a game to see who can collect the most and the best.

I recently joined a mushroom picking outing and I must say I was shocked by the amount of mushrooms in the forest, and with the knowledge that Russians have about all the different mushrooms that grow in the forest. For me it was fun, like a game, and I didn't too bad either. I collected several large mushrooms of the sort that are considered to be the best, the cep.

The best part was the eating them afterwards, I've always liked dishes with mushrooms and mushroom soup, but after picking and cleaning them yourself, it was even more delicious!
