Heroic Defenders of Leningrad
70 years After the Blockade
Last week St. Petersburg commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Nazi blockade on Leningrad, which started in 1941.
The blockade of Leningrad lasted 872 days, from 1941 to 1944, with more than 700,000 civilians losing their lives due mainly to starvation caused by the siege.
In remembrance of the blockade, this weekend we made a trip down to the Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad on Victory Square.
The monument was built in the shape of a huge broken ring, representing all the efforts it took to break the Siege of Leningrad. The inside of the ring is lit with gas torches and its walls feature engravings depicting the medals won by the city during the war, displaying and celebrating the incredible courage shown by the city and its defenders.
Inside the monument is an underground memorial hall with an exhibition room devoted to the blockade. Make sure that you see the map of Leningrad's defenses and the museum's short documentary film, and take a look at the beautiful mosaics on the eastern and western walls of the hall.
Outside around the monument are several sculptures representing the soldiers, sailors, and civilians who did not surrender to the Nazis despite hunger, cold, and the dangers of constant enemy bombardment.
The monument is located one block from metro station Moskovskaya.
